Lake Grove sits at a modest elevation of around 118 feet, and the older, taller trees in the neighborhoods that grew up around Lake Ronkonkoma's early recreational era can take real wind loading in a nor'easter, especially where decades of unmanaged growth have left heavy limbs high in the canopy.
Many of Lake Grove's residential streets were built up in the early 20th century when the area around the lake became a popular recreation destination, and the mature trees planted then now have root systems well established under sidewalks, driveways, and foundations.
The groves that gave the village its name are still reflected in the tree cover on older residential lots, and branches from those long-established trees are frequently overdue for clearance work near rooflines and utility lines.
With so much of Lake Grove's tree canopy dating back to early-1900s development around the lake, a meaningful share of the village's largest trees are now old enough that decline and deadwood are a real, ongoing concern rather than a rare event.
