A tree doesn't have to look dead to be dangerous. Arborists use a specific set of visual checks to rate how likely a tree is to fail — here are the five that matter most, and what to do if you spot one.
None of these signs by itself is an automatic death sentence for a tree, and none of them means you need to panic and call for an emergency removal today. What they mean is that the tree is worth a real, in-person look before you decide anything — these are the same checks a certified arborist runs through during a risk assessment, condensed to what a homeowner can actually see from the ground.
A vertical crack running along the trunk, or a crack at a major branch union, means the wood has already started to fail structurally — it's not cosmetic damage. The risk goes up sharply if the crack runs all the way through the stem, if there's more than one crack in the same section, or if there's soft or decayed wood visible inside it. A crack near where two large limbs join is a particularly weak point, since that union may already be carrying less structural strength than it looks like from the ground.
Shelf-like fungal growths (sometimes called conks) on the trunk or around the root flare are one of the clearest outside signs of internal decay — the fungus is often feeding on wood that's already rotting from the inside. Other tells that point to the same problem include carpenter ant activity, heavy woodpecker damage in one concentrated spot, or hollow-sounding wood when tapped. As a rough rule, a tree with less than about a third of solid, sound wood left in its trunk or a major limb is considered a high failure risk.
Plenty of healthy trees have a permanent, long-standing lean — that's just how they grew, and it's not automatically a problem. What matters is whether the lean is new or getting worse, especially if it shows up alongside cracked or heaving soil at the base of the trunk. That combination can mean the root plate is actually starting to lift out of the ground, which is a very different and more urgent situation than a tree that's simply always grown at an angle.
Roots that circle around the trunk instead of growing outward (girdling roots), exposed and severed root stubs, or a missing root flare where the trunk should visibly widen into the ground are all signs the root system isn't anchoring the tree the way it should. This matters more, not less, on Long Island's sandy soil, which already tends to produce shallower, wider root systems than denser inland soils — a tree with additional root damage on top of that has even less to hold it upright in high wind.
A fully dead tree is rated as a high failure risk regardless of any other factor, since dead wood loses strength and becomes brittle over time with no ability to compartmentalize damage the way living wood can. Short of a fully dead tree, a dead limb or dead top more than about ten feet long is considered a meaningful hazard on its own, and even shorter dead sections are worth flagging if there's visible decay in them.

Not automatically, but it does mean the tree needs a real in-person look. Fungal growth at the base usually points to internal decay, and how much of a problem that is depends on how much sound wood is left and where the decay actually is — that's not something to guess at from a photo alone.
