A stump grinder chews the visible stump down to somewhere around 6 to 12 inches below grade, leaving a bed of wood chips and sawdust behind that gets worked into the area. It's the faster option — a small stump might take well under an hour, and even a large one is typically finished the same day. What grinding doesn't do is take out the root system underneath: an estimated 80 to 90 percent of the root mass is still in the ground when grinding is done, just buried and no longer visible.
Full removal excavates the stump and pulls the root ball out of the ground entirely, which takes meaningfully longer — often several hours depending on how large the tree was and how far its roots spread — and typically needs heavier equipment to do it. It leaves a real hole that has to be backfilled afterward. The upside is that it's actually gone: no buried root mass left behind to interfere with whatever comes next in that spot.
